Middle Grade Books You Don't Want to Miss! #IMWAYR #BookLove #Bookaday

I love it when I find books that are perfect for middle-grade readers. The characters speak to them, the plot engages them, the lessons stretch them just enough, and the length scaffolds them. Here are a few new middle-grade novels you should have in your classroom library and bookroom:

What Lane?

There is so much to love about this book! The plot moves quickly, the characters feel like someone you know right away, and it addresses big issues our students are thinking about in life. Themes of friendship, acceptance, and social justice stand out. It will get readers talking, thinking, and acting. The main character Stephen opens his heart and mind to readers so we can walk alongside him and feel the bias he experiences. Maldonado truly creates an authentic, relatable character for us to connect with and learn from. I love the visual Maldonado provides with the use of lanes. He poses questions we can all think about and reflect upon. Young readers will notice the use of lanes throughout the story and will want to discuss its meaning in book clubs. It will be a powerful way for them to think about their own lives and what lanes they are in and why. This is a book I wanted to read in one sitting - the length is perfect for a first chapter book read aloud or a text to launch book clubs. It will get kids talking and thinking together from the first page.

Three Keys

I don’t think I realized how much I missed Mia until I had Three Keys in my hands. Mia continues to use her love of writing to impact the lives of her friends and the motel. She is strong, determined, creative, and loyal. Readers will welcome the characters they loved from Front Desk back into their hearts. Mia’s friendship with Jason will get readers talking about perspective and forgiveness. Lupe and her family’s struggle as undocumented immigrants will get readers wanting to learn more about our country’s laws and current events. Through it all, there will be moments of humor, heartache, and triumph. It is a book of hope, community, and determination. At a time when we all need some encouragement, Mia reminds us, “It’s okay to be scared. It doesn’t mean you’re not brave. Even the bravest people are scared sometimes. But you know what? We’re going to get through this. Together.”

#BetterTogether has been my hashtag and inspiration since March 13, 2020. If there has been a silver lining of this pandemic, it has been the generosity and collaboration I have experienced professionally and personally. Both of these books will help you create a community of learners in your classroom - a community that questions, acts, stands up, and believes in a more just world.
