Kid Tested ... Teacher Approved! Procedural Mentor Texts for K-2 #IMWAYR #MentorTexts #BookLove

I am always on the lookout for explanatory or “how to” mentor texts for K-2 readers.  Mentor texts give young writers an opportunity to study and experiment with features in their own writing.  I love when I find books that are great for read aloud and work as mentor texts for our K-2 writers.  Here are a few that are working well for me this fall:

Let’s just start with the topic … could it be more engaging?  It is funny, informative and even surprising.  There several different types of diagrams that provide new ways for students to think about using in their explanatory texts.  Here’s one of my favorites:

 Cook in a Book Series

These books are so engaging.  Students will love the flaps, the interactive panels, the pop-out features, and the step by step directions.  I was even convinced to make tacos after I read tacos!   Add this series to your classroom library or bookroom – you won’t be disappointed!  Here are the ones I added to my mentor text collection!
