Slice of Life: Readers Take My Go-To Text to a New Level! #SOL21
The Quiet Book, by Deborah Underwood has been a go-to text for a decade. If you are looking for a text to model comparative language this one never fails. There are so many examples that touch on so many senses that every reader finds something to connect with — and the pictures add any scaffolding one might need.
This year I pulled it out to use in virtual lessons. Once again it did not fail me, but it did surprise me. Readers in several classes across different districts all wanted to think about their own types of quiet and there were some new ones!
There are many kinds of quiet:
You’re muted quiet.
Mask muffle quiet.
Six feet apart quiet.
Wishing we were together quiet.
Chat box quiet.
Together but not really quiet.
Virtual for twelve months quiet.
Games with no spectators quiet.
Empty streets quiet.
Playground in Covid quiet.
Turning and talking with my dog quiet.
Kids are the best! What kinds of quiet would you add this year?
