Virtual Classroom Library Basket: Texts to Get You Moving, Grooving and Singing #IMWAYR #booklove
I have been thinking a lot about what I am reading, what kids are reading, and what kids who do not have access are reading. Not all kids have access to physical or digital books, so we need to start thinking outside the box and expand our definition of text. Look around to see what they can read, I promise – a lot of it is literacy.
- Catalogues
- Notes Around the Home
- Recipes
- Toy, Game, Craft Directions
- Ingredients
- Memory Boxes
- Notes/Cards/Letters Saved From the Past
What else can we add to this list to help teacher, parents and caregivers find ways for kids to read at home?
Yesterday, I started thinking about music. We have been playing music a lot right now and music is text. So many songs have free lyrics online – with and without the music. This might be a great way for our kids to read and respond. It does require digital access but there might be a way for them to do this on a phone or smaller device if a computer is not available. Here is a digital bin I created of songs for elementary students. I just put a few to get you started. What songs would you add? What songs would your students add?
Send me your ideas and I will add them to this virtual classroom library basket or create a whole new basket for teachers to use! We are stronger together – our students need us to work together so they can tell us what they are reading.
