Keeping It Real - Using Digital Texts to Shift Power and Control

In their book, In Community with Readers, Burkins and Sibberson discuss how they use digital texts to shift power and control during read-alouds and minilessons.

“A move Lynsey has made recently is to be intentional about not centering herself in whole-class instruction. Rather than setting up a chair in the front of the whole-group space to share books during minilessons or read aloud, Lynsey moves around in the back of the space while the text is centered on a large screen in the room. This shift has been a powerful one as the students, the text, and the conversation are the things that are centered” (p. 39).

This book is what teachers need and want. The authors show us how they unpack standards alongside their students. They provide classroom examples, step-by-step guides, planning ideas, and questions to view the standards through a lens of possibilities rather than limitations. This text will be one you return to again and again. I will be packing in my coaching bag and sharing it with everyone this year.

This digital bin has 39 personal narratives you can use for read-aloud, minilessons, and mentor texts. Try out Lynsey’s and Franki’s suggestions using these beautiful texts!

If you are wondering how to add these digital texts to your classroom library so kids can access them, check out my blog post from last week.

Embrace the possibilities!
