Hey – Ms. L. You read to us.  You are an adult.

I look down to meet eyes with the voice standing in from of me.

Yes. I do. I am.

Ms. N is helping E.  Ms. S was keeping an eye on us, but had to help T.  W needs to use the bathroom NOW.  We cannot go to the bathroom without telling an adult.  I will be W’s buddy – we need a buddy.  You are an adult.  We are going NOW. 

I take a minute to process.  Look at my watch to see how late I will be if I wait to see this transaction through.  It’s doable.

Ok.  I’ll wait here.  Come right back … wait … what are your names again?

I watch them head off and think…
